IBM zEnterprise Data Compression for z/OS- New Enhancement
« on: August 24, 2015, 08:10:44 AM »
In less than 4 months - the OD Development team in conjunction with our IBM STG colleagues, have been able to add a significant enhancement to OnDemand that should have a huge impact for our zOS customers (both existing and future)..

Starting in 9.5.0.3 (shipped August 14, 2015), Content Manager OnDemand can now leverage IBM  zEnterprise Data Compression (zEDC) for z/OS

What is zEDC?

zEDC Overview:  http://www.ibm.com/common/ssi/cgi-bin/ssialias?infotype=PM&subtype=BR&htmlfid=ZSB03059USEN
zEDC FAQ:  http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=tss1fq131484&aid=1

Why is this important?

In the past, all OnDemand compression was software based - by leveraging zEDC we can now off-load the OnDemand software based compression/decompression to a hardware device.  This will result in significant MIPS reduction for both loading of data to OnDemand and retrieving data from OnDemand.  The OD compression types of OD77 and OD77Lite and zEDC use the same compression algorithm (although each is tuned differently), therefore whenever OnDemand loads data it can detect whether or not the zEDC is available, and if so, will leverage the zEDC.
