Title: Online Backup
Post by: jeffs42885 on July 28, 2015, 07:37:47 AM
I am just wondering if there is any point in bringing down CMOD when an online DB2 backup / backup of the cache file system is being performed. I believe at another vendor that was common practice and it did not take that long even with hundreds of millions of rows, 1000+ application groups.

I am working with around 650 AG's now and 140GB of data, and I am wondering if there is an absolute NEED to bring down CMOD during a backup.

Thanks

As long as the system is quiet (i.e. not loading/expiring) then online backups are acceptable and can be a good option.  I still recommend offline backups in all but the largest systems for their ease of restoration.

Given the size of the install you're talking about, I'd do offline backups.  I recently finished automating nightly offline backups on a system 10 times that size, and the backup window is between 7 and 10 minutes.
