z/OS Server / Re: Creating "Stacked" PDF out of Exstream
« on: October 06, 2010, 04:37:14 AM »
Got it.  It concatenates all the docs together into one PDF.  I'm fairly certain that if you can't break this file up into individual PDFs, that you'll have to use the PDF Indexer.  It's been years since I've played with it, so I'll let someone else fill in the blanks about it.

If you are experiencing problems with the duration of time it takes to perform a load, you'll need to look in the following places to try and find performance enhancements:

  • Tune DB2 - increase memory usage, ensure DB2 transaction logs are on separate disks
  • Check TSM - you're not waiting for slow storage devices like optical or tape, are you?
  • AG Config in CMOD - are you using too many indexes?

I'm sure others on the forums have their own recommendations.

I'm not familiar with 'Extream', but I think you're talking about loading PDF files using the Generic Indexer.

You don't have to necessarily 'stack' these PDFs into a single file -- the Generic Indexer will let you specify an individual file name for each PDF, and concatenate them into 'objects' at load time.

Can you give us more information about what is wrong with the way Extream is producing files now?

It doesn't hurt to open a PMR when you're really stuck.  :)

Pankaj is right -- if you use multiple folders (some customers use one folder per Application Group) then you can run multiple instances of arsload.  Of course, this won't help you get more data into a SINGLE Application Group faster, but it will help prevent a number of small loads from being stuck behind a large load.

If you are having load performance issues, you might need to tune DB2, or look more closely at your TSM configuration.

Looks like DB2 has an issue.

Check your event viewer or DB2's "db2diag.log" for more diagnostic information on where the problem might be.

Please read Chapter 5 of the Web Enablement Kit (ODWEK) Implementation Guide.  It talks about the 'CLASSPATH' environment variable.

Maybe you could be coerced / convinced to create a document or series of slides talking about this?  In my 15 years of working with CMOD, I've never had more than a fleeting understanding of AFP Font Mapping, and I know I'm not alone!

Report Indexing / Re: Changing Filters to Indexes
« on: September 24, 2010, 02:46:15 PM »
A fresh backup is *always* a good idea.

Just remember that creating indexes from scratch, especially when you have a LOT of documents, will take a considerable amount of time.  You'll want to do this when the system is idle.

To get an idea of how long it might take (and how much disk space you'll use) it would be best if you did a test on a smaller App Group first.

Good luck!

Report Indexing / Re: Changing Filters to Indexes

Hey Russell.

You can certainly switch on the indexes for those fields -- it will improve the performance of queries against that Application Group -- however, the results will only be as fast as your SLOWEST query.

If there is a field that your users are searching on the most, it makes sense to turn on indexing for that field to improve performance for them, and reduce CPU & IO hits for you!

Just don't go overboard!

MP Server / Re: New CMOD installation
« on: September 24, 2010, 07:10:18 AM »
Hi Pankaj.

You seem to be having a lot of trouble installing CMOD.

Please refer to the checklist in the Installation and Configuration Guide, Chapter 47, entitled "Checklist for installation on Windows".

By closely following the documentation, you can eliminate many of the issues you've experienced.  The checklist will help you find steps that you may have missed during your installation.

You can find Chapter 47 of the Installation Guide for 8.4.1 at:

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/cmod/v8r4m1/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.ondemand.installingmp.doc/ars1i071574.htm

Hi Phillipe.

"Large Object Support" is reserved for *very* long reports - where the number of pages is extremely large, (over 1000 pages).

Large Object Support breaks the report into 100-page chunks, so that the ENTIRE report doesn't need to be transmitted to a client in order for it to be viewed.  This saves processing time, and network bandwidth.  It was especially important 10 to 15 years ago, when network infrastructure inside companies was very slow (anywhere from 5 to 20 Megabits) and external network infrastructure was usually dial-up modems.

If the document you are trying to load is not a line-data or AFP report, you shouldn't be using Large Object Support.

I strongly suspect you don't have the correct document type configured in your Application setting.

Give us some more information (type of document, formatting, style, or maybe the Application definition) so we can try to help out a little more.

Yes, you need to run the arssyscr command.  Check the Installation Guide for more information.
