Hey all
Andrew H here from PFG. In a few of the IOD sessions regarding 9.0's new Text Search capabilities, the old method of "Server Based Searching" was discussed. I am unfamiliar with this option and in the past, have simply run ARSDOC to retrieve documents and then a search utility against the content. Can anyone comment on how to use "Server Based Searching" Just today, I received a request to pull back a significant amount of content so thought I'd try this "new" old method...

Hi Andrew.
- Define a new folder.
- Add the AGs you want to search.
- Add fields as you normally would when defining a folder.
- Under the 'Field Definition' tab, create an extra field called 'Text Search'.
- From the 'Field Type' Pop-up, choose "Text Search".
- Click 'Add' to add the field to the folder.
- Map fields as you normally would when defining a folder.
(Note: You don't need to map the 'Text Search' field to an AG.)
Now when you search your new folder, you'll have a field called 'Text Search' that will search the contents of documents that meet the rest of your search criteria. Remember that large text searches can put a substantial strain on your server, and may take considerable time to return results. It's best to search with your normal index criteria, and once you think you have the collection of documents you want to search, THEN add the text search parameters.
If you have problems with text search (check in your System Log for errors if you're getting no results or an error on search), check the CMOD Admin Guide, and search for 'arsusdoc' for troubleshooting assistance.

That worked just as you described and as mentioned, with an existing hit-list, performs pretty decently.
Since I hadn't heard of the feature before (I guess we've been living in a cave...) I checked the z/OS Admin Guide as you suggested, but there's no mention of ARSUSDOC and hardly anything for "Text Search". However, I did find limited documentation in the MP Admin Guide for ARSUSDOC. So maybe I'm not alone, or it was documented/talked about heavily when the feature was first released, or.... maybe it's just one of those "had to be there" kind of things.

I tested this as well with LINE data...I then attempted to do it with a .txt file that opens in WORD...This file comes directly to our server from the user...We are using the GENERIC INDEXER....When attempting to do a TEXT SEARCH on a specific value that was in the data, it comes back nothing found...Is this because of how the data is formatted?...Does the TEXT SEARCH only work on LINE DATA?...

The server doesn't recognize user-defined or graphic document types. If you can convert from Word to text or AFP, the search function should work. The new text search function in v9.0 recognizes more data formats (PDF, etc.) and should do what you need.

Hello All,
just for your information this document will explain all about the installation and what you can and not do with FTS (Full Text Search). There are a few "bugs" in the documentation, but it should be "easy" to correct them after a few tries :-D

And it works with any kind of data that can be parsed somehow, so PDF, ASCII, XML, AFP, Word documents, ... works.
