Cache only - No TSM?
« on: January 30, 2018, 01:30:55 PM »
Hello,

We are looking to get away from using TSM and use either NAS or a cloud-based filesystem.  Does anyone have any comments, suggestions on dropping TSM.  (not my choice but a strategic decision)
We don't have Swift and I don't know about using HFDS either but we do have IBM Object Storage (Cleversafe) .

Thanks
J.

I've always really liked TSM (now "Spectrum Archive")-- it provides access to such a huge variety of storage devices.  I know that the costs of tape haven't made the same meteoric drop as disk, but I'll always recommend keeping it, if only for the reduced electricity costs.

For simplicity, I'd choose the disk storage.  It's practically identical to cache, except there's no links to gobble up inodes in your first cache filesystem -- just cheap-and-deep storage, structured similarly to how it's done in cache.  It's really the simplest way forward.

And here's another reason to keep it in TSM/SA.  This huge cheap-and-deep storage needs to be backed up somewhere.  And for a lot of companies that are already using IBM software & hardware, the enterprise backup system of choice for them is TSM/SA.

Thanks, however I didn't get a vote in this direction.  The storage folks want to shutdown TSM.

Does anyone know of a process to repatriate off of TSM back to CACHE?

You'd use arsadmin to pull the object off TSM and put it into your new storage node...  potentially millions / billions of times.  :)

Hi Derrick,

I  have queries regarding arsadmin retrieve and store commands hope you reply for those thanks in advance.

    1. After I retrieve and store the documents successfully using arsadmin retrieve  and store command the document is not reflecting in the user client and system logs do not contain any message, can you please let us know what's the problem is?

2.We are planning to retrieve documents stored in one single application group , so we need to give the filenames in the  arsadmin retrieve command (example:1FAAA) there lots and lots of files in one application group how can I get  all those names?

3. We had tried using arsdoc to retrieve the data stored application group but can you please suggest which is good in performance  arsadmin retrieve or arsdoc.

Thanks in advance
