AIX vs Linux
« on: March 01, 2019, 09:45:44 AM »
We are in the process of planning upgrade from CMOD 9.5 to 10.1

We currently run on AIX 7.1 but the UNIX team that are the OS admins want to move to Linux.  I am mainly just the CMOD application admin and admit I am no Unix expert but I always thought that AIX was king when it comes to performance and reliability.

We provide online banking customers with access to all their electronic statements and average around 35,500 concurrent users so performance and reliability are critical.

Could anyone educate me on pros/cons of AIX vs Linux ?  I am not sure what advantage moving to Linux would provide other than maybe cost related ?

I'm an old (in every sense of the word) z/OS guy.

If you have z hardware already in house google "advantage of linux on z".

My understanding is that zLinux or Linux on z is a very popular option.

There really isn't much difference between AIX and Linux in terms of core functionality.  Linux has the benefit of having an enormous corpus of open-source software in pre-compiled packages that can be installed (with dependencies) in seconds.  AIX...  not so much.  In terms of reliability, I find both to be equal, although IBM's mid-range server hardware has crazy things like swapping parts while the server is running.

Between acquisition costs and software maintenance...  It's not much of a contest.  :)
