Error viewing AFP - Event Log error references FTDBDT.DLL
« on: June 30, 2021, 12:28:50 PM »
This is a new OnDemand v.10.5 system archiving AFP documents.  Multiple Client PCs with the identical Client v.10.5.0.0 (64 bit).  I have some PCs that display AFP docs with no issue using the AFP Workbench for Windows Viewer v.2.08.01.00.
However, I have many PC on the network installed with the same software that will open the Viewer window for a second then close without viewing the document.  Every time I get a Windows Event log Error:

Has anyone experienced this issue or know what fixes it on the failing PCs.  Comparing DLL dates and files sizes between working and failing PCs, they are the same.  We can't find any issue with file or folder permissions.

The 10.5.0.2 client has an updated AFP Viewer and fixes some other AFP issues.

I'd try that before I'd do anything else.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I upgraded one of the clients to the latest 10.5.0.2 and I still have the same issue.

I'm out of bullets.  Better open a problem record.

We found this to be an issue that only affected older Windows 10 builds in the environment.  This problem was caused and fixed by changing a setting DEEP in Windows Defender.  It is found by:
Open Windows Defender | Select Exploit Protection Settings
Change the setting for 'High-entropy ASLR' from "On by default" to "Off by default".

Someone smarter than me may know why this setting when set to "on by default" causes the AFP Client Window to close within a second or two of opening and displaying the document

Should we create a PMR for this so the developers can be aware of it, for a future release?

Or is this fixed with the latest patch level in Windows?

As I mentioned, this is not an issue with the newer Windows 10 builds being currently deployed.  I do not know whether this this is due to a change in Windows patch behavior or they way the tech departments creates their generic Windows builds.
I am documenting my experience here for anyone else who may encounter this behavior. I believe a PMR was opened with IBM and were told that it was a customer environment issue to figure out.
