CMOD slow during online DB2 backup
« on: April 19, 2012, 12:03:30 AM »
Hi all,

We are experiencing the following.

We start a online DB2 backup at 21:00. This backup runs until 00:00. During this backup retrieval of document is very slow , > 1 minute.
I can imagine that there is a performance penalty when you backup a db2 database while you are retrieving documents.
But clients are complaining about performance and are not happy with it.

Does this sound familiar to you? Or do you have advice for me?

System: AIX / POWER5 / 1 CPU / 2GB memory, all data on DS4300 disks.

thx.

Michel.

You're obviously constrained somewhere -- CPU or IO or RAM.  It's really up to your System Admin to find out.

If you ARE the System Admin, check on the CPU/IO stats with iostat / vmstat / topas.

It's probably time for a hardware upgrade though -- my personal development server (p510Q) is more powerful than your production server!  :D

Thx JD.

After investigating this issue it is indeed IO related. We are transferring everything now to IBM Storwize V7000 luns.
And you are right. system is 5 years old. Within a few months we will migrate everything to POWER7 LPARs.

Brings me to another question.

The current cmod environment is a DR550 solution. In my opinion this is just a marketing term for a cmod black box.
I do not see any problems in migrating everything to POWER7 LPARs. Do you have an opinion on this?

Thanks once again.
Kind regards,

Michel.

Hello Michel,

DR 550 is more an Archiving Storage BlackBox (more a TSM Black Box), that CMOD can use.

And if you are moving CMOD to a new LPAR, then the connection to the DR550 won't change.

Sincerely yours,
Alessandro

A DR550 / TSM consultant said some years ago its just an switch "archiveretention = YES" what makes the DR550 so unique. Everything behind is a normal AIX with a TSM-Server... yes its pre configured ;)

Cheers

Which version of DB2 are you using? v9.5 or higher? You might want to look into this: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/db2luw/v9r5/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.ibm.db2.luw.admin.dbobj.doc%2Fdoc%2Fc0052483.html
