Is it possible to do a backspace from CMOD 8.5 to 8.4?
« on: September 07, 2012, 12:58:13 AM »
Hi,

I have a question please. We migrate CMOD 8.4.0.3 to 8.5.0.4 in september.
I would like to know if it's possible to do a backspace from 8.5.0.4 to 8.4.0.3 if we meet a problem in production? The change department asked me this question. Do you have a reply about this subject?
Thanks for your cooperation.
Best regards
Philippe

Hi

I think you're in deep water...
It will be quite a heavy challenge

If you send me your email address, I'll send you an presentation I had at ODUG two years ago, where we upgraded from 7.1.2.x to 8.4.1.
The biggest challenge is that during the process you change the ARS-tables... and to restore them... that's the challenge.
Since going from 8.4.0 -> 8.4.1 changed the layout of the ARS-tables.

PS: My email address, you can find on my profile here in odug

Hello Philippe,

Well, if I understand correctly you have done the migration 8.4.0.X -> 8.5.0.X.
And the management wants a "parachute" so if there are problems they can go back to the old state.

So the best thing is using the last 8.4.0.X backup you had (you did a last backup, did you?)
Restore it, and re-archive all the data since the beginning of the migration.
For TSM, that would be probably a problem, since the object are still in it, and it will probably complain that some objects are already archived...

So in both case, either changing the database structure or restoring the old database and reload everything since then...
will be a pain.

I you have not done the migration yet, but you are looking for a "what do we do if the migration doesn't work", then instead of playing around trying to modify back the tables themselves... the restore of the old database (the ARS% tables) is your best friend... and I would not go to any other road.... too risky, and you won't get support anyway (well maybe not no support, but probably it will difficult to find someone who did it, except by try and errors... so in all cases I consider this road as too risky for a production environment)...

I hope that helps a little bit...

Sincerely yours,
Alessandro

Hi philippe,

we have mitgrated COMOD7 to 8.4.1 and were abel to go back for about two weeks. Our technique was:

- backup of database
- reconfiguring the arsloads to listen to new destinations
- writing an apllication that has listened to the old destinations:
  a) copy the report to the new destination
  b) save the reports in a 'save destination'

Our environment is Z/OS.
