Upgrade from 8.4.0
« on: November 05, 2014, 08:44:25 AM »
Does anyone know if we can migrate from 8.4.0 of OnDemand for z/OS directly to 9.5?
Can't find any mention of migration path in 9.5 documentation.
Thanks!

You can migrate from any release to any new release directly as long as you go back through all of the readme's and make sure you follow all of the steps.

But I wouldn't attempt it without some serious experienced expertise assisting.

9.5 is still pretty new.

9.0 is in production in lots of big shops now and is fully supported as an upgrade from 8.4.0 (there's a section in the 9.0 readme for it).

This is purely opinion, but I think 9.0 would be a good interim step.

Thanks! We are still on V2 though, but it's good to know what our options are.

And I thought I was bad.  We upgraded to 8.4 about 4 years ago.
Part of the delay was the two years it took to migrate our 2.1 indexes to the
8.4 index tables.

And now we are headed off of z/OS to AIX, again migrating data.
But this seems to be much faster.  Started off-loading mid July 2014,
though we are still adding reports to CMOD 8.4 on z/OS.

Seems until we upgrade the AIX system from CMOD 8.5, z/OS line data reports do not
index on AIX 8.5 CMOD. Or so the documentation states.

You may want to find out from IBM sooner than later about index and data migration from 2.1 to more current versions.

Hi Larry - is what you're looking for the OS/390 Indexer now available on AIX at 9.0?

Yes it is.  Our extreme motivation to upgrade to 9.0 on AIX, as we primarily have line data reports on z/OS CMOD 8.4.
We can't discontinue line data reports to z/OS until we are on CMOD 9.0 on AIX.

Our new systems seem to all produce PDFs, so future data once mainframe systems are migrated will be PDF.
But meantime, migration is entirely line data reports. Migration works with generic indexing.
