Application group with no storage set
« on: January 26, 2012, 09:57:08 PM »
Hello folks,

I was making a few updates to some of our application groups the other day, and I noticed that a few application groups did not have a storage set defined. These have been setup for quite a while, and we haven't received any errors with retrievals or loads. In the storage management tab, there is simply nothing selected..No TSM, no cache..nothing. What can cause this..and is there a best practice to approach

Hello Jeff,

there are 2 scenarios where that can happens:

1) you create the "System Log", "System Load", "System Migration" with the arssycr command
2) with the Windows Admin Client, you export an application group from one server to another, and you check the check box "without storage set"

then in both case you are without storage set in your application groups.

In that case, everything will go to the cache. No protection from TSM.

Now, it is possible to move the data from the cache to your desired storage set, that means basically using arsmaint. Now I need to get to my note, because there others steps to make too.

Sincerely yours,
Alessandro

My personal 'Best Practices' when it comes to storage are this:

1)  Every Application Group gets it's own Storage Node (preferably by the same name), and is configured to 'migrate later' (advanced tab).
2)  Every Storage Set is configured for TSM -- even if you have no intention of using TSM -- because "the only thing that stays the same is change".
3)  Use TSM.  It's the only way to have a truly optimized system.  Always move unused data to tape ASAP, to make more room for the data people ARE accessing.
